Landscapers are great at what they do — mowing, mulching, planting. But hardscaping is an entirely different trade. Laying pavers, restoring stone, and sealing surfaces requires specialized tools, materials knowledge, and years of hands-on experience that most lawn care companies simply don't have.
This is not a knock on landscapers. The good ones keep a property looking alive all season, and we happily work alongside them — a fair number of our jobs come to us as a referral from the homeowner's own landscaper, because they know where their trade ends.
The problem is that hardscape failures are almost never workmanship you can see on the final walkthrough. They are base failures, chemistry failures, and water failures, and all three are buried under a surface that looks perfect the day the crew packs up. You find out a season or two later.
Here's what goes wrong when you hire the wrong crew
Improper base preparation
Leads to sinking, shifting, and cracked pavers within a season or two. A patio is only as good as the excavation, the compacted stone underneath it, and the edge restraints holding the field together — and none of that is visible once the pavers are down.
Wrong sealers or cleaning agents
Can permanently etch stone, strip color, or void manufacturer warranties. Concrete pavers, clay brick, bluestone, and travertine each tolerate different chemistry and different pressure, so choosing the product is part of the trade — not something to sort out in the driveway on the morning of the job.
No understanding of drainage
Water pools where it shouldn't, damaging your home's foundation over time. Pitch, grade, and where the runoff actually goes are decided before the first paver is set, and they are close to impossible to correct afterwards without taking the surface back up.
Guesswork on polymeric sand
When applied incorrectly, it washes out or hardens unevenly, leaving gaps for weeds and insects. It has to go into dry joints, be swept to full depth, and be activated with the right amount of water — too little and it never sets, too much and it hazes over the surface.
Every one of those four is cheaper to do right once than to undo. Ripping out a sunken patio means paying for the same pavers twice, and a stone surface that has been etched by the wrong cleaner does not go back to how it looked.
